Setting up Bill ID – Admin

Automatic billing ID requires a set up in your firm settings to be able to create and issue bills in Thread. 

Your firm must enable and choose Billing ID settings in admin settings. Users will not be able to create or issue bills until this is set and enabled. If you do not have your bill ID set up yet, you will see below pop-up, warning you to configure your settings and guiding you to the relevant page in Thread settings. 


Setting up a Bill ID  

Navigate to settings at the bottom of your Thread menu, then choose Time & Billing > Billing General. 


Under the Billing ID section, you can choose a bill ID prefix and a start number, e.g. Inv100.  

Once saved, the billing ID layout will apply to all existing bills with start number starting from the first bill added in Thread in chronological order. 

Numbers will then continue for all bills going forward. 

The billing ID layout can be edited any time, and any changes made will only apply to future bills.

Maximum digit length of the prefix is 3 digits, and of the starting number is 7 digits.
 
Alert
When editing bill ID starting number, the entered value must be greater than the existing last bill ID value.


Using Bill ID 

Billing ID is auto assigned to every bill once it is created. Bill ID will be visible within the Bill Details, on the Bills page of a matter, and global Bills tab under your Thread Financial page. 








Bill ID is also available in your Template Designer so you can include it on your Bill templates. 



You can also search for bills by their ID on both pages, and in reports. 







Deleted Bills 

If a bill gets deleted, you cannot reuse the bill ID. Deleted bills can be viewed in the Bills report with their corresponding bill ID’s.  

You can also see when a bill was deleted and by who, in the audit logs.

NotesDeleted bills on Bills report and in audit logs will only show bills deleted from date of release of bill ID feature (25th July 2025). 

Bills Reports 

Bills report now includes a Bill ID column, and a Status filter for Deleted bills.
