File Permissions

File Permissions

The File Permissions section of Thread allows you to control which users in your organisation can read, view, edit, and delete files and documents that you have created. Permissions can be managed in the Role Permissions section of Admin Settings (applies across all files), or directly from a specific file.

You can add permissions based on a file category, for example, Family Law cases, or you can choose to grant or remove permissions for a specific file.

Viewing File Permissions

To see which users in your organisation have access to your specific file, and to see the permissions they have, do the following:

  1. 1. Click Files in the left pane of Thread.

  1. 2. Search for a file using the search bar provided.

  1. 3. Click the file name.

  1. 4. In the File Details tab, click Permission.

  1. 5. Here, you will see what permissions your colleagues have to your file, and where your file inherits permission from.

Only the file owner can edit the permissions of their file.

Stop Inheriting Permissions from File Category

Files automatically inherit permissions from their parent category. So, if you have a criminal law case, and criminal law cases are configured to grant all users in your organisation the ability to view, edit, and update files, these configurations will automatically apply to your file.

To edit permissions, you will have to stop inheriting permissions to grant or remove access for another user.

  1. 1. Click Files in the left pane of Thread.

  1. 2. Search for a file using the search bar provided.

  1. 3. Click the file name.

  1. 4. In the File Details tab, click Permission.

  1. 5. In the grey pane below, click Stop Inheriting Permissions.

Your file will now have unique permissions. You can grant access and edit the permissions of users.

Only the file owner can edit the permissions of their file.

Granting File Permissions

If you want to specifically grant file permissions to a member of your organisation, you can do this easily.

Note: If a file inherits permissions from its parent category (i.e. Family Law or Bankruptcy), you will have to stop inheriting permissions to grant access to another user.

  1. 1. Click Files in the left pane of Thread.

  1. 2. Search for a file using the search bar provided.

  1. 3. Click the file name.

  1. 4. In the File Details tab, click Permission.

  1. 5. To grant permissions to another user, click Grant in the top grey pane.

  1. 6. A pop-up window will appear. Select the user you want to grant permission to and click Next.

  1. 7. Choose the permissions you want to grant to the user and click Save.

Only the file owner can edit the permissions of their file.

Editing File Permissions

You may want to edit the file permissions of users in your organisation, for example, granting them permission to edit documents, and removing their permission to delete the file contents.

If a file inherits permissions from its parent category (i.e. Family Law or Bankruptcy), you will have to stop inheriting permissions to edit user access.

  1. 1. Click Files in the left pane of Thread.

  1. 2. Search for a file using the search bar provided.

  1. 3. Click the file name.

  1. 4. In the File Details tab, click Permission.

  1. 5. Select the user(s) that you want to edit the permissions of and click Edit in the top grey pane.

  1. 6. A pop-up window will appear. Remove or grant permissions to users by toggling Yes/No.

  1. 7. Click Save.

  2. To change user permissions make sure to use the toggles as above. If you choose Remove button instead, the user will be removed from the list and you will not have the option to edit their permissions, and their permissions will not change.

  3. You must be the file owner to be able to edit the file permissions.

Sharing File Info

With Thread, you can share your file details with external Microsoft business accounts. You can view who you shared your file with in File Permissions page.

  1. 3. Click the file name.

  1. 4. In the File Details tab, click Permission.

  1. 5. In the top grey pane, click Sharing Info.
